A smart heating controller, such as Hive, can let you set schedules and adjust your heating from a thermostat and compatible phone app. We check how it connects to your boiler and existing controls before adding it to the installation.
The thermostat and receiver control the heating locally. A hub and home internet connection make compatible app control possible. Exact components, wiring and heating zones vary.
Illustrative smart-control arrangement, not a wiring diagram. The selected model’s instructions and the surveyed heating system determine the installation.
What you gain—and what to check
Schedules and room temperature
Set the heating times and desired temperature using the chosen thermostat. Features depend on the specified controller.
Remote access
Use a compatible app when the hub, account and internet connection are set up. If the internet is unavailable, local heating control is generally still possible with Hive, though app control pauses.
What is involved
Supplying the controller components named in the quote.
Fitting the receiver and thermostat, and setting up the hub if included.
Connecting and checking the heating control with the boiler.
Showing the customer basic thermostat and app setup where agreed.
What we check at survey
Boiler compatibility and the existing programmer, thermostat and wiring.
Number of heating zones and any separate hot-water control requirement.
Suitable thermostat and receiver locations and electrical provision.
Router location, internet access and customer device/app requirements.
What affects the quote
Controller brand and kit, hub, receiver and number of zones.
Existing wiring changes and electrical access.
Hot-water control or additional thermostats requested.
Whether an eligible MPH promotion is applied to this particular boiler quote.
What your written quote includes
The exact controller kit and installation scope.
Any hub, hot-water control or extra-zone equipment included.
Any promotion or 100% controller discount clearly shown.
Setup responsibilities and excluded subscriptions, connectivity or extra wiring.
Standard installation versus offer: a boiler needs appropriate controls, but a particular internet-connected controller is optional unless your written package includes it. Free-Hive eligibility and contents must be confirmed in the quote; an app, account and suitable connection may be needed for remote features. No energy-saving figure is promised here.
Internet controller questions
Will Hive work with my boiler?
It works with many UK heating systems, but we check your exact boiler, wiring and zone arrangement before specifying a kit.
Is Hive free with every boiler?
No blanket promise is made. Your written quotation will show whether an eligible Hive offer applies, exactly which equipment is included and whether installation is covered.
What happens if the internet goes down?
With a suitable Hive setup, heating can still be controlled locally at the thermostat, while remote app control is unavailable until connectivity returns.
Can it control my hot water too?
That depends on your system and selected controller. A cylinder and separate hot-water circuit may need a different or additional control arrangement.
Do I need a phone to use it?
A compatible phone and app are used for remote features, but the physical thermostat provides local control. We explain setup for the specified product.
Ask which controller suits your system
Tell us your postcode, boiler model if known, and whether you have one or more heating zones or a hot-water cylinder. We will confirm the correct controller in the quote.
