If your Vaillant ecoTEC plus 826 has stopped giving you heating and hot water, start with the display and the controls you can use without opening the boiler case.
This guide is for the UK ecoTEC plus 826 combi identified in Vaillant's operating instructions as VUW 20/26CS/1-5 (N-GB), article number 0010036015. If the details on your boiler do not match, use the operating instructions for your exact appliance instead.
Stop first if there may be a gas or carbon monoxide emergency
Do not treat a gas smell, a carbon monoxide alarm or possible carbon monoxide symptoms as an ordinary boiler fault.
If you smell gas, avoid flames and smoking, do not touch electrical switches, ventilate if it is safe to do so, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.
If you are worried about carbon monoxide, open doors and windows, move everyone into fresh air and call 0800 111 999. Seek urgent medical help if anyone feels unwell.
1. Confirm that this is the correct ecoTEC plus 826
Before following model-specific advice, check the appliance details you can read without removing the casing.
The manual used for this guide covers the ecoTEC plus 826 VUW 20/26CS/1-5 (N-GB), article number 0010036015. A different ecoTEC model may have different controls or instructions.
2. Read the display before changing anything
Look for:
-
a blank display;
-
a fault beginning
F.; -
a limp-home message beginning
N.; -
a maintenance symbol;
-
a flashing pressure symbol; or
-
heating or hot-water symbols that appear switched off.
Write down the exact message. Do not repeatedly reset the boiler or guess at a service-menu setting.
3. Check the visible power supply
If the display is blank, check whether the boiler's normal external electrical supply or the relevant household fuse has been switched off or tripped.
Do not remove the case, touch internal wiring or replace a damaged power cable. If the supply will not stay on, or you are not sure what you are looking at, stop and arrange professional help.
4. Check heating and hot-water settings
On the boiler's basic display, check that heating and domestic hot-water temperatures have not been turned down or switched off.
If a Vaillant room control or another system controller is connected, the heating settings may be managed there rather than at the boiler. Check the schedule and target temperature using the operating instructions for that exact controller. This article does not assume which controller is installed.
If hot water works but the radiators remain cold, Vaillant's troubleshooting table specifically points to the external control as one possible cause. A low target temperature, an inactive heating period or heating mode being off can all prevent a heat demand.
5. Read the system pressure
The ecoTEC plus 826 instructions allow you to view the pressure on the basic display or through Main menu → Information → Water pressure.
Vaillant recommends at least 1 bar and says that a reading below 0.8 bar needs heating water to be added. The same manual also says every heating installation is individual and that a competent person should explain its filling and purging arrangement.
For that reason, this guide does not tell you which valves to open. If the pressure is below 0.8 bar, the pressure symbol is flashing, you cannot identify the installed filling arrangement, or pressure keeps falling, stop and ask a competent person for help. Visible leaks also need attention.
6. If heating and hot water are still unavailable
Arrange professional help if:
-
the exact fault remains after the permitted checks in the correct manual;
-
the display shows a fault or limp-home code you cannot resolve;
-
the boiler has power but will not start;
-
pressure is low, keeps falling or a leak is visible;
-
the power supply trips again; or
-
you are unsure about any gas, water or electrical control.
Do not remove the casing, alter gas controls, bypass safety devices, change installer settings or keep resetting a persistent fault.
MPH Boilers can help with boiler repairs and fault finding. If the appliance is operating but needs routine care, see boiler servicing. An enquiry is not a confirmed appointment; the team will confirm coverage and the next available step.
Frequently asked questions
Does this guide apply to every Vaillant ecoTEC boiler?
No. It is limited to the UK ecoTEC plus 826 VUW 20/26CS/1-5 (N-GB), article number 0010036015, covered by operating instructions 0020308119_03 dated 28 November 2023.
Should I reset the boiler?
Not as a general first step. Record the exact display message and use the action allowed for that code in the correct operating instructions. Do not repeatedly reset a fault that returns.
Can I top up the pressure myself?
The manual permits an end user to maintain pressure, but it also says every installation is individual and the filling process should be explained by a competent person. If you cannot positively identify the installed arrangement or pressure keeps falling, stop and ask for help.
Why does the hot water work while the heating stays cold?
Vaillant's troubleshooting table lists an incorrectly set external control as one possible cause. Check the exact controller's schedule and target temperature using its own instructions. If those are correct and the heating still does not start, arrange a fault check.
