If a maintenance symbol appears on your Vaillant ecoTEC plus 826, it does not automatically mean the boiler has stopped working. Vaillant’s current UK operating instructions say the boiler can continue to operate while showing a maintenance message, but the message should be discussed with a competent person.
This guide applies to the current UK Vaillant ecoTEC plus 826 combi, article number 0010036015, within the VUW ecoTEC plus family covered by operating instructions 0020308119_03. Older ecoTEC models can use different displays and instructions, so first check the label and paperwork for your own appliance.
What does the maintenance symbol mean?
The symbol is a request for maintenance attention, rather than a universal diagnosis of one failed part. The boiler may still provide heating and hot water.
Do not clear or ignore the message simply because the boiler still runs. Record what the display shows and arrange for the appliance to be assessed or serviced if due.
Four safe checks you can make
1. Record the complete display
Take a clear photograph of the screen. Note whether you can see only the maintenance symbol or also a water-pressure reading, an F.xxx fault code or another message.
That detail helps the office or engineer understand whether this is routine maintenance, a pressure issue or a separate fault.
2. Check whether heating and hot water still work
Try the controls as you normally would. Do not remove the boiler case, enter an installer menu or change combustion settings.
If heating or hot water has also stopped, pass that information on when you ask for help. A maintenance symbol and a loss of service should not be treated as the same thing without checking the complete display.
3. Read the displayed water pressure
The Vaillant instructions allow the filling pressure to be read on the basic display or through Main menu → Information → Water pressure. The same instructions say a flashing pressure reading alongside the maintenance symbol indicates that heating water needs attention.
Every filling arrangement is individual. If a competent person has previously shown you the correct filling device for this installation, follow the instructions supplied for your system. If you are unsure which valves or device apply, stop and ask for help. Do not guess, force a valve or keep adding water.
Repeated pressure loss, a visible leak or pressure rising too high needs professional investigation; repeated topping-up is not a repair.
4. Check when the boiler was last serviced
Look for the last service record and have the boiler’s model, serial number and installation address ready. Vaillant’s operating instructions call for annual inspection by a competent person, and Vaillant’s UK service guidance also recommends annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
MPH can confirm servicing availability for your postcode and boiler. An enquiry is not a confirmed appointment until the team agrees the date and time.
Should I reset the boiler?
Not for the maintenance symbol alone. The operating instructions do not describe the maintenance message as a reason to repeatedly reset the appliance.
If a separate fault code is displayed, use the instructions for that exact code and model. Do not keep resetting a recurring lockout. Photograph the code and contact a competent heating engineer.
When should I stop and get urgent help?
Stop using the boiler and seek professional help if you notice a water leak, overheating, a flue-gas smell, repeated lockout or pressure that repeatedly falls or rises abnormally.
If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches or use a phone inside the building. Ventilate if it is safe, leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. Treat a carbon-monoxide alarm or suspected carbon-monoxide symptoms as an emergency and move into fresh air.
What information should I send MPH?
Before contacting the team, gather:
- A photograph of the full boiler display.
- The exact model and serial number from the appliance label or paperwork.
- Whether heating and hot water are working.
- The water-pressure reading, without changing anything.
- The date of the last service, if known.
This makes it easier to decide the sensible next step without guessing from one symbol.
Frequently asked questions
Is the maintenance symbol a fault code?
No. Vaillant treats the maintenance message separately from the F.xxx fault-code table. A fault code shown at the same time must be assessed on its own meaning.
Can I keep using the boiler?
Vaillant says the appliance may continue to operate while showing the maintenance symbol. That does not make the message optional: arrange advice, particularly if servicing is due or any other symptom is present.
Can I top up the pressure myself?
Only use the filling arrangement if it has been correctly identified for your installation and its operation has been explained to you. If you are uncertain, stop. Incorrect filling can cause damage or hide an underlying leak.
Who can service the boiler?
Gas-boiler work should be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. For MPH availability, send your postcode, boiler model and preferred dates through the service or contact route.
Need help with your Vaillant boiler?
Use the MPH Boilers service page or contact MPH Boilers with a photograph of the display, your postcode and the boiler details. If the appliance has stopped working or is repeatedly locking out, see our boiler repair information.
